Highlights & annotations
Save the exact passages you care about, from web pages and PDFs, and annotate, recolor, and revisit them.
Highlights capture the specific sentences that mattered, not just the whole page. SortlyAI stores highlights from web pages (via the extension) and from PDFs (in the in-app viewer), and both feed Ask your library.
Highlighting a web page
With the browser extension: select text on any page, right-click, and choose Save highlight to SortlyAI. If the page isn't saved yet, SortlyAI creates the bookmark for you and attaches the highlight to it.
Highlighting a PDF
Open a PDF from your Files and choose Open & Highlight:
- Select text and pick a color to save a highlight. It's stored with its exact page and position.
- Saved highlights re-render on the page every time you open the file, and the highlights list lets you jump straight to any of them.
- On the Mac app you can also right-click selected text → Save Highlight to SortlyAI.
PDF highlighting works on the web dashboard and the Mac, iPad, and iPhone apps, using the same anchoring, so a highlight made on one platform appears in the same spot on the others.
Colors, comments, and cleanup
Every highlight supports:
- Five colors: yellow, green, blue, pink, and purple.
- A comment: annotate a highlight with your own note.
- Recolor and delete: from a bookmark card's More → Highlights, or by tapping a mark in the PDF viewer.
Where highlights show up
- On a bookmark, its detail pane lists the page's highlights with your comments, and More → Highlights opens them for editing.
- On a file, the PDF viewer's side list shows all of that document's highlights.
- Across the library, highlights are indexed so Ask your library can quote them back with a citation.
Tip
Highlights are one of the highest-signal things you can save. A highlighted phrase is far more likely to resurface in chat answers than a page you saved but never read.
